CUSTOMER: UNHCR Uganda (Yumbe District).

In 2021, Musa Body Machinery partnered with UNHCR Uganda to deliver the world’s first refugee soap production turnkey project. Installed in Yumbe District—home to one of the largest refugee settlements globally—the facility was designed to manufacture laundry soap locally.

The system was engineered to cut UNHCR’s recurring procurement costs, which had reached hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, by shifting from purchasing soap to producing it within the settlement. Beyond the financial savings, the project aimed to create a practical skills hub, offering both refugees and host community members opportunities to learn soap production, operate custom machinery, and generate income.

This innovative model positioned Uganda as the pioneer of a sustainable humanitarian solution under UNHCR’s global framework.

The project involved custom fabrication of soap-making machinery at Musa Body’s Kampala workshop. Each unit was designed for durability, energy efficiency, and ease of use, ensuring it could be operated by trainees with no prior technical background.

The technology process included:

  • Fabrication & Assembly of specialized soap production lines.

  • Deployment & Installation in Yumbe settlement.

  • Hands-on Training for refugees and community helpers, covering operation, quality control, and maintenance.

  • Commissioning & Handover to UNHCR for full-scale community use.

Despite COVID-19 related supply chain challenges, Musa Body ensured delivery on time by leveraging local sourcing and engineering expertise.

Customised Services

Musa Body provided a full turnkey package, from fabrication and logistics to on-site training and post-installation support. The project was custom-designed to balance cost savings, durability, and humanitarian impact.

Qualified staff

Our engineers and trainers ensured smooth implementation by translating complex technical processes into simple, practical steps. With decades of experience, Musa Body’s team made sure beneficiaries—many with no prior technical background—could operate and maintain the machinery confidently.

This pilot delivered multiple benefits that stretched beyond machinery:

  • Cost Savings: A clear path for UNHCR to save hundreds of thousands of dollars annually on soap procurement.

  • Skills Development: Refugees and host community members acquired technical, production, and business management skills.

  • Employment & Livelihoods: The facility became a platform for income generation and economic empowerment.

  • Sustainability: By reducing dependence on external suppliers, the project fostered self-reliance and resiliencewithin the refugee community.

  • Diplomatic Impact: The project demonstrated how local engineering innovation can redefine global humanitarian assistance models.

“This pilot is not just about making soap—it is about dignity, skills, and sustainability.”
— UNHCR Field Representative, Yumbe District

Powder coating is a popular industrial finish that can be used to coat a variety of materials, including metals, plastics, and ceramics. It provides a strong finish that can last for years without deteriorating majority of other finishes. Powder coating typically works by applying the dry powder onto an item using an electric charge. This charge keeps the powder coat as tight as possible to the exterior. Once applied, the powder coating is then melted and bonded to the metal surface by heat and pressure, creating a durable finish.

The powder itself will contain resin and pigments for coloring, as well as other potential additives that help to reach the desired levels of thickness, hardness or shine. The process used to make the powder coating stick to the surface starts by pushing the powder through a spray gun with compressed air. The tip of the spray gun is equipped with an electrode that will provide an electrostatic charge to the powder, allowing for the particles to stick closer to the surface than they would if applied using a traditional method. This charge will keep the coatings tightly bound to the exterior of the item once sprayed on. Next the part will be placed in the curing oven. Once there, the powder coating will melt and combine as the temperature reaches a heat point between 350 and 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat point may vary depending on the specific form of coatings used. The length of the curing process is between 10-20 minutes and will depend.

Powder coated parts are used extensively in both the automotive and appliance industry. Powder coatings can resist corrosion and rust, providing a longer life for the product. Parts that are powder coated can also be more easily cleaned than those with a standard finish. It is a useful finish for products that will be exposed to a harsh outdoor environment. The added resistance to rust and corrosion that is provided by powder coatings allow the surfaces of steel beams, appliances, outdoor furniture, and similarly exposed material to stay clean and protected for much longer. There is a wide range of reasons as to why using powder coating may be the right option for the material you are looking to cover.

Once you’ve chosen between a thermoset powder and a thermoplastic powder, you will have to choose which resin-base is best for your materials. The application process of each paint powder will remain mostly the same, but the quality and properties of each resin will vary. You will need to know which properties and components are most important for your items. Some of the most common forms of resin paint powders are:
  • Epoxy. Epoxies present what may be the best combination of hardness and corrosion resistance among all powder paints. Epoxies will also adhere to metal very easily, especially if the metal has been pretreated and is completely clear of dust and debris.
  • Epoxy-Polyester Hybrid. The polyesters in this hybrid will bring down the durability of the epoxy. However the addition of polyesters allows for a wider variety of cosmetic looks. When these forms of powder are combined, the hybrid product become much more suitable for indoor appliances and other household items
  • Urethane. Urethanes are similar to polyesters in their chemical makeup, but Urethanes manager to offer better exterior durability as well as good chemical and corrosion resistance. They are typically more expensive than the other powder coatings.
